How Much Does a Teenager Cost, or Two Million Is Not Enough?

It’s nice, but oh, how much money it swallows up again!
Here’s what you’ve got: food, clothes, shoes, school supplies, extracurricular activities, tutoring, music lessons, mobile phone, computer, bike, skateboard, Netflix, mobile data, bubble tea, kebab, noodles, cinema, T-shirts, concerts, trips, insurance, pocket money, extra pocket money…
Where are the days when we made do with breastfeeding and so many hand-me-down clothes from friends and acquaintances that there was no room to step at home!
According to the latest data, “one piece” of teenager costs about 9,700 CZK (388 €) per month – food, clothing, housing (just think of all that water in the shower!), school supplies, toiletries, and basic health care.
And then it starts!
Mobile phone, data plan, Netflix, Spotify, in-game upgrades (“offers”) – another 850 CZK (34 €).
Food outside the home – noodles, McDonald’s, kebab, sushi, bubble tea, Starbucks… because “there’s nothing in the fridge” = no food – another 1,000 CZK (40 €).
Cinema, concerts, trips, sleepovers at friends’ houses (“of course, everyone brings something”).
Clubs, sports, tournaments at the other end of the country, training camps, skiing… and we’re talking higher tens of thousands of crowns more per year.
When we take a modest approach, it comes to over 11,500 CZK (460 €) per month. And if you have two “pieces” at home? That’s like a mortgage on an investment apartment, which we often talk about when creating financial plans.
Despite all this, please don’t forget about a well-set life insurance policy. (Remember what we used to get up to at their age – and they also have YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram where they chase likes.)
Once they get through this crazy period, they are worth 13,000,000 CZK (520,000 €)! (See our other article). It would be a shame if they couldn’t fully realize their potential… to have children and for you to miss the chance to one day see how they handle being the parents of their own teenagers.
Raising a teenager is financially demanding and requires careful planning. An open discussion with children about money and the family budget will help them better understand the value of money and develop financial literacy from an early age.
