Travel Insurance: How Not to Pay More Than You Have To – and Still Be Truly Protected

Summer holidays are approaching – and with them, the question of travel insurance. You may already have it without even knowing. Many payment cards, whether debit or credit, offer travel insurance as part of their service package. But is it really worth it? And when does it make sense to arrange insurance separately?

What Does Card-Linked Insurance Include?

Travel insurance linked to a payment card is usually automatic or can be activated for an extra fee. It typically covers basic risks – medical expenses, liability for damages, or flight delays.

The advantage is convenience: there’s nothing to arrange, and it covers not only the cardholder but also family members. But beware – limits may be low, and the scope of coverage may not suit more demanding trips, such as to the USA or for skiing.

Some cards offer higher limits as part of premium services for affluent clients, and when certain conditions are met, this insurance can be free for the customer.

Standalone Travel Insurance

When you arrange separate travel insurance, you can choose the exact coverage and limit amounts you need. Want to insure sports, valuables, trip cancellation, or roadside assistance? No problem.

And often at a surprisingly low price – comparable to the extra fee for card-linked insurance. If you don’t travel regularly, several times a year, it can even work out significantly cheaper. Most clients don’t cancel their card-linked insurance and end up paying for it unnecessarily all year.

Conclusion: Don’t Underestimate, Don’t Overpay

Don’t pay unnecessarily – but don’t settle for too little either. If you have card-linked insurance, find out its parameters. Sometimes it’s enough, but other times it’s worth paying just a few euros more for truly reliable protection.

Travel should be a joy, not a risk.
