Guide to Compulsory Liability Insurance: What You Need to Know About Your Vehicle’s Insurance

Let me introduce you to the current topic of the importance of compulsory liability insurance, which is legally required for all motor vehicle owners. This applies not only to passenger cars, trucks, and buses, but also to motorcycles and even scooters. Compulsory liability insurance protects you and your passengers from unexpected financial costs in the event of a traffic accident.
Compulsory liability insurance usually covers damage caused to third parties in traffic accidents. It typically includes:
-
Bodily injury – medical expenses and compensation for third parties.
-
Property damage – repairs or replacements for damaged property of third parties.
-
Legal costs – expenses associated with legal actions resulting from the accident.
It is also important to set the right coverage limit for compulsory liability insurance. The limit is the maximum amount the insurance company will pay in the event of a claim. The law sets a minimum coverage limit, which is now 50,000,000 CZK (€2,000,000). The current maximum limit you can choose is up to 250,000,000 CZK (€10,000,000). If you cause damage higher than your coverage limit, the insurance company may demand that you pay the difference between the damage caused and the coverage limit. Therefore, consider whether saving a few hundred crowns a year on premiums, for example with coverage of 50/50 or 100/100, is worth the potential risk.
Recent statistics show that the cost of compulsory liability insurance is steadily increasing. On average, it rises by X% each year.
