Save Money by Changing Your Energy Supplier

Transferring and optimizing energy contracts is a common service provided by our real estate agency. Let’s answer some of the questions we often encounter regarding this service.

Why is it beneficial to change your energy supplier with a professional?

We help clients choose from products offered by several proven suppliers and provide relevant recommendations – for example, the most advantageous combination of price and contract length. This is very different from a situation where a client (such as a new apartment tenant) tries to transfer a contract on their own within one supplier, where they can only choose from a limited range of products – and may not find a suitable solution at all.

Can everything be handled from home with any supplier?

Yes, changing suppliers or signing a new electricity or natural gas supply contract can be done without visiting the supplier’s branch. In our portfolio, we can complete the entire process with all suppliers. You only need to have a few documents that we use to prepare an offer – documents that everyone receives at least once a year by post or email (e.g., periodic electricity or natural gas invoice).

How does the whole process work?

We prepare an offer that includes various contract lengths with different contractual suppliers. We provide a personal recommendation for a supplier and the reasons for our choice. The client selects an option, and we arrange all documents for review and signature. We then handle the submission and necessary steps to change the supplier or transfer the energy supply contract.

Is the service free of charge?

Yes, the energy optimization service is free.

What types of contracts do you handle transfers for?

We handle transfers of electricity and natural gas contracts.

On what occasions do you arrange transfers?

When selling/purchasing or renting a property. The advantage here is that when proof of loss of relation to the property is provided, any contract can be terminated without supplier penalties. We can also assess any existing contract and, if possible and advantageous, change the supplier. Entrepreneurs and companies also contact us to explore potential savings.

How much can be saved by changing suppliers?

With current market options, price differences can sometimes be very attractive, in the range of 500 CZK-1,500 CZK/MWh (€20 – €60/MWh) excluding VAT. For calculating possible savings, here are indicative annual consumption figures:

  • Apartment (2+kk): 2–3 MWh (electricity), 5–10 MWh (natural gas)

  • Family house (150 m²): 3–5 MWh (electricity), 8–14 MWh (natural gas)

  • Family house (150 m²) using only electricity (heat pump, electric boiler): 8–20 MWh

  • Medium-sized company: 20 MWh (electricity), 50–200 MWh (natural gas)

How long does a transfer take?

The transfer is set according to each supplier’s valid deadlines. The standard termination period for an active contract is 30 days from submitting the termination request, followed by about 10 days for the supplier to ensure approval and connection with the electricity market operator.

Are fixed-term contracts or open-ended contracts more advantageous?

It always depends on the supplier. Typically, clients who choose a fixed-price option (i.e., fixed-term contracts) get a better price than those with the same supplier on an open-ended price list. Currently, we most often arrange short-term contracts (12 months).

Should I be concerned about smaller suppliers, or is it better to choose a larger, established one?

We do not offer suppliers without a long-standing market presence and proven client reliability. We may not recommend a newly established supplier. However, many suppliers (including smaller ones) that survived 2022 are now ready to supply energy to customers without problems.

Is it common to change suppliers every year, or is it better to stay with one?

Very few customers change suppliers every year. We usually discuss with the client whether the change met their expectations and whether there was anything unsatisfactory with the current company. If we find a point that the current supplier cannot meet, we look for a more suitable option.

Can my supplier unilaterally increase the price? How can I protect myself?

Yes, the supplier can change the agreed terms. It always depends on the product agreed with the supplier. If the supplier does so unilaterally, they must inform the client, who then has the option within the given deadlines to either accept the offer or terminate the contract and choose a new supplier without penalties. In case of a unilateral price increase, you can terminate the contract up to 10 days before the price increase or contract changes take effect.

What should I do if I’m considering changing my supplier or if I have bought/sold/rented a property and need to transfer energy contracts?
